Have you ever wondered why they call it a gut rehab? Well,
you’ll find out if you decide to do a major remodel. It’s not the
home’s guts that are being torn out; it’s the homeowner’s.
All kidding aside, remodeling your home isn’t a fun experience but if you
prepare yourself, hopefully you’ll recall it as one of the best decisions
you could make. So, here are some tips to help you survive your remodel.
Remodeling is costly, time consuming and can turn a
normal family dysfunctional within a week. But preparation can help homeowners
reduce the chaos, confusion and desire to run for the hills. Start by hiring an
honest contractor. Next, budget at least 10 percent more than you'd expect to
spend. Also, make sure you are getting what you want by communicating
thoroughly with your contractor. “What IFs” last for years, so
don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions and use written communication as
much as possible.
If you can, take a mini vacation. It can be something
small, like a weekend at a nearby hotel, or something more extravagant, like a
spa package at a resort. Either way, getting away from the hassle and
inconvenience of a remodeling project can refresh and rejuvenate you for the
rest of the project. You might also reserve a few personal or vacation days at
work -- for the alleged delivery of the counter and cabinets.
Lastly, a flexible attitude and a positive outlook can
make a stressful process a little more enjoyable. Be open to new options,
understand that problems may arise, try to maintain a sense of humor and
remember that the project will come to an end even if you can’t see
it. |
